The 2020 Foshan Cantonese Opera Huaguang Emperor’s Birthday Folk Activity was held online to display pictures related to Cantonese Opera and a retrospective exhibition of previous activities, and share some classical music from vinyls for the first time, in which people can enjoy the precious songs sealed in old albums at home.

It is reported that a total of 116 Cantonese Opera albums dating from the late Qing Dynasty to modern times are preserved in Chancheng Museum. In order to better protect these physical materials, the museum has invited professional institutions to professionally clean and digitally transcribe the albums, so that citizens can listen to the Cantonese Opera a hundred years ago through the intervention of modern science and technology.

The relevant person in charge of the Chancheng Museum said that Huaguang Emperor, whose birthday was on the 28th day of the ninth lunar month, was said to be the protective saint of Cantonese Opera industry. Foshan, one of the birthplaces of Cantonese Opera culture, has been committed to the protection, inheritance and promotion of Cantonese Opera culture and art. In addition, Chancheng District as a central urban area has held corresponding folk activities on Huaguang Emperor’s birthday every year since 2008 to promote the activation and inheritance of Cantonese Opera culture.

This year, the newly launched “Online Show of Classical Plays of Vinyls” has displayed classical plays to the audience through new modern technology, which has met the spiritual and cultural needs of Cantonese Opera fans around the world during the epidemic period and cultivated more sense of cultural achievement for the public.
